چکیده

Tonically spiking as well as bursting neurons are frequently observed in electrophysiological experiments. The theory of slow–fast dynamical systems can describe basic scenarios of how these regimes of activity can be generated and transitions between them can be made. Here, we suggest a biophysically plausible mechanism based on homoclinic bifurcations of a saddle periodic orbit which explains a transition between tonic spiking behavior and bursting behavior in a neuron model of Hodgkin–Huxley type. Also, this mechanism is featured by the coexistence of tonic spiking and bursting oscillations. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mechanism of bistability: tonic spiking and bursting in a neuron model.

Neurons can demonstrate various types of activity; tonically spiking, bursting as well as silent neurons are frequently observed in electrophysiological experiments. The methods of qualitative theory of slow-fast systems applied to biophysically realistic neuron models can describe basic scenarios of how these regimes of activity can be generated and transitions between them can be made. Here w...

Homoclinic Bifurcations of Periodic Orbits En a Route from Tonic-spiking to Bursting in Neuron Models

The methods of qualitative theory of slow-fast systems applied to biophysically realistic neuron models can describe basic scenarios of how these regimes of activity can be generated and transitions between them can be made. We demonstrate how two different codimension-one bifurcations of a saddle-node periodic orbit with homoclinic orbits can explain transitions between tonic spiking and burst...

Six Types of Multistability in a Neuronal Model Based on Slow Calcium Current

BACKGROUND Multistability of oscillatory and silent regimes is a ubiquitous phenomenon exhibited by excitable systems such as neurons and cardiac cells. Multistability can play functional roles in short-term memory and maintaining posture. It seems to pose an evolutionary advantage for neurons which are part of multifunctional Central Pattern Generators to possess multistability. The mechanisms...

Transition between tonic spiking and bursting in a neuron model via the blue-sky catastrophe.

We study a continuous and reversible transition between periodic tonic spiking and bursting activities in a neuron model. It is described as the blue-sky catastrophe, which is a homoclinic bifurcation of a saddle-node periodic orbit of codimension one. This transition constitutes a biophysically plausible mechanism for the regulation of burst duration that increases with no bound like 1/square ...

Multistability and Infinite Cycles in a Model of the Leech Heart Interneuron

We argue that the Lukyanov-Shilnikov bifurcation of a saddle-node periodic orbit with noncentral homoclinics explains the effect of bi-stability observed in a neuron model based on a HodgkinHuxley formalism. In this model the dominating regime, depending on the initial state, can be either spiking oscillations or weakly irregular bursting ones. It is also shown how the bifurcation of the blue-s...
